‘My success is not mine alone, but it is the strength of the collective’

We are thrilled to share the remarkable progress and milestones achieved within the Ahikā housing project over the past year. This initiative is not just a construction project; it's a journey towards creating a vibrant and sustainable community for our whānau and the wider community.

In August 2023, He Waka Tapu joined forces with Te Tūapapa Kura Kainga - New Zealand's Ministry of Housing And Urban Development (HUD) in Ōtautahi to tackle our region's housing crisis. This partnership isn't just about building homes—it's about nurturing inclusive communities.

HUD, leading our country's housing strategy, brings expertise and resources to the table, prioritising Kaupapa Māori principles outlined in the MAIHI Framework. Meanwhile, our focus is on holistic solutions for Māori families in need, securing land for quality, affordable rentals.

Our flagship project, Te Whare Takarore, promises ten rental units tailored to local needs. Guided by Māori principles, our aim is not just to house but to empower communities.

Together, we're not just building houses—we're building hope for affordable housing in New

PĀTAKA PUKAPUKA

In collaboration with cook brothers, we're embarking on a project to establish several "pātaka pukapuka" (book share hubs) within our community. These hubs will function much like our "pātaka kai" (community pantries), but instead of food, they'll provide access to books.

If you're a business, school, community group, or club thats interested in joining us and hosting a pātaka pukapuka at your location, please reach out to denise.curtis@hewakatapu.org.nz.
