(indigenous Collaboration)

Last week, we had the immense privilege of meeting with Antoinette Braybrook and Kelly Faldon from Djirra, an esteemed organisation dedicated to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander wāhine. For over 20 years, Djirra has played a crucial role in helping these women escape the cycles of family violence and navigate the complex legal landscapes associated with leaving abusive situations. Their tireless work embodies a deep commitment to empowering individuals and fostering safer, more resilient communities.

During our meeting, we engaged in meaningful discussions about our respective approaches and shared insights about the challenges and successes we face in our work. This exchange of knowledge was invaluable as we explored potential avenues for collaboration, with the shared goal of enhancing our programs and services to better meet the needs of our whānau and communities. Our collective aim is to create a supportive network that not only addresses immediate concerns but also promotes long-term well-being and stability for those we serve.

By working together, we hope to design initiatives that reflect the cultural values of our communities and provide tailored support that resonates deeply with those facing similar challenges. As we navigated these conversations, the importance of unity and collaboration became crystal clear “Me mahi tahi tātou mo te oranga o te whānau” (We must work together for the wellbeing of the whānau).

The partnership with Djirra not only broadens our capacity to make a positive impact but also reinforces the idea that by joining forces, we can create a more robust framework for supporting Indigenous women and their families. We are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead and look forward to exploring ways to implement collaborative strategies that amplify our collective efforts.
