(AVON ROWING CLUB)

14 / 03 / 2024

Four times a year we close our doors and invest in our Kaimahi with our ‘Tikanga Days’ these days are dedicated to engaging in tikanga training, allowing us to deepen our understanding and appreciation for Māori traditions and organisational values while strengthening our bonds as a team.

HE WAKA EKE NOA.

This time around, we all met up down at the Avon Rowing Club for a Waka Ama competition. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the spirit of “Me mahi tahi tatou,” where we came together not just to learn, but to enjoy each other’s company. It was heartening to see everyone participate with enthusiasm and encouragement, truly embodying the essence of ‘mahi tahi tatou’.

A huge mihi to our leadership for their unwavering support, making these days possible. A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the volunteers, from those managing the BBQ and keeping time to those setting up the pontoons, ensuring the PA system was ready, and preparing the delicious kai, including the refreshing salads. Special thanks to Meno for coordinating security on the day; your efforts did not go unnoticed!

FIRST COME, BEST DRESSED.

A special shoutout to all the Waka teams that brought the event to life! The team colours and bootleg printed tees added an extra layer of excitement and pride, with Toma’s Ark and Te Aranga deserving accolades for being the best dressed on the day.

We appreciate the proactive efforts of our Health & Safety team for their preparation leading up to the event, ensuring everything ran smoothly. Linda Glasgow our in house events wizards dedication to logistics and equipment setup was integral in making the day a success, and we are grateful for your hard work.

To our steerers, Dave, Apiata, Taryn, and Karena—what a fantastic job you did, even when I may have jumped in to paddle when I shouldn’t have!

A special mention to the winners of the wahine category, Unity (Lita, Teina, Lexi, Mel Winter, Silvia), who contributed to making the day unforgettable. My apologies for overlooking you during the prize giving—your achievements are noteworthy! Congratulations also to the men’s winners, Kaihautu, with our secret weapons, Daryl Gregory and Jo-Ziah, and the mixed winners, the MOE whanau.

Lastly, congratulations to the Te Aranga team for taking the “He Waka Eke Noa” trophy, awarded not just for your stylish attire, but for the exemplary way you embraced and upheld the values of He Waka Tapu as an organization.

We look forward to our next Waka Ama day when the warmer summer months return, ready to build on our these experiences and knowledge.

Oti ra, nga mihi ki to tatou matua nui i te rangi, nana i homai, nana i tango, he honore he kororia ki to ingoa tapu.
