Ka Mua Ka Muri: Walking Backwards into the Future – A Cancer Educational Symposium

He Waka Tapu, in collaboration with the Southern Cancer Society hosted the Ka Mua Ka Muri – What Up C? Cancer Educational Symposium, bringing together health professionals, researchers, and community members to enhance understanding and support for Māori and Pasifika whānau impacted by cancer.

The symposium emphasized the interconnectedness of the past, present, and future, reinforcing the importance of ancestral knowledge in navigating cancer diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.

The event featured keynote presentations from Prof. Parry Guildford on CDH1 and stomach cancer, Dr. Scott Babington on lung cancer research, and Russell and Derek from the Prostate Cancer Foundation on prostate cancer awareness.

Desma Dawber and Screen South highlighted the importance of early detection, while Joseph Tyro, Toni Biddle & whānau shared iwi and hapū perspectives on cancer care as well as lived experience centering around community connection as one of the most underutilized methods of outreach.

Tiria Stewart explored advocacy pathways for whānau, while Majestical Taniwha shared his experience with the mental health challenges of losing a parent to cancer.

Tiana Te Moana discussed Rongoā Māori traditional healing practices in cancer care further illustrating the broader impact of cancer on communities.

Attendees participated in discussions aimed at empowering whānau with practical knowledge and support strategies. The symposium reinforced the importance of culturally responsive cancer education and the need for continued advocacy for whānau-centered care.

He Waka Tapu and the Southern Cancer Society remain committed to supporting Māori and Pasifika communities through education, resources, and collaboration.
