Whaiora Stories: Anna Skinner's Journey

(Whaiora Stories)

Anna Skinner, 60, has spent most of her life on two wheels. Cycling has never been just a sport or a way to get around—it’s been her way of exploring the world, staying active, and finding balance in life.

As a tangata whaiora at He Waka Tapu, Anna takes part in the Mindfulness Open Group and Whakarareke. These sessions have given her a deep sense of belonging and reinforced the importance of whānau and community.

From childhood to adulthood, Anna’s bike has been her constant companion. Whether it was racing on the road, touring through Australia, or simply riding around her local area, cycling has always been her way of connecting with the world. Being on a bike brings her right into the environment—the sounds, the smells, the ever-changing terrain. It’s never easy, but that’s part of what makes it worthwhile.

More than just physical exercise, cycling has been a lifeline for Anna’s mental health. The simple act of pedaling, the release of endorphins, and the freedom of the open road have helped her through difficult times.

In 2014, after years of struggling with gender dysphoria, Anna made the courageous decision to come out as a woman. It wasn’t an easy choice—she was married with three children—but she knew that living authentically was the only way forward. With hard work, love, and support, her transition has been a largely positive experience.

Transitioning brought changes to her cycling, both physically and mentally. Her strength and performance on the bike shifted, making riding a different experience. Over the last four years, she has fought to be recognized in the female category of competitive cycling. With support from Cycling New Zealand and MTB New Zealand, she has competed in three events as a woman. Despite public criticism, the support from her cycling community has reassured her that she’s on the right path. She’s grateful for those who have stood by her and listened.

Anna’s journey is ongoing, but she moves forward with determination. He Waka Tapu has played a key role in helping her find her place, strengthening her sense of belonging, and reminding her of the power of community. As she continues to ride through life’s challenges, she does so knowing she’s exactly where she’s meant to be.
