(HWT In The Chathams)

Our kaimahi recently traveled to Wharekauri to support whānau and strengthen community relationships.

Court Support and Whānau Engagement.

We provided court support for five whānau, ensuring guidance during their appearances. A milestone was reached with no Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) assessments required. One whaiora was sentenced to 12 months of supervision, with an interlock device installed in their vehicle. Given the remote location, a tailored supervision plan was created.

Beyond the courtroom, we engaged in home visits and self-referrals. A visit with a whaiora wāhine helped establish a support plan, while a 1:1 session with another whaiora reinforced whakawhanaungatanga (relationship building) and well-being strategies.

Community Connections and Well-being

Our team stationed themselves at the HUB, engaging with locals and promoting a men’s night group. While attendance was low due to transport challenges and court outcomes, the groundwork was laid for future gatherings, potentially shifting to home-based sessions.

We also strengthened ties with key community members and service providers, including Ha O Te Ora Wharekauri Trust, Corrections, local police, and kaumatua. These partnerships are vital for ongoing support and well-being initiatives on the island.
